4 Things to Do If Your Heating System Won’t Turn On

One of the worst things that could happen on a cold day is finding out your heating system won’t turn on. Before you go through the process of booking a heating technician for repairs, try a little bit of troubleshooting first. Often, the solution to unresponsive heaters is relatively simple.

1. Check If the Thermostat Has Power – Most of the time, heating systems won’t turn on because of the thermostat, so this should be the first thing you should check. If you have a thermostat with an LCD or electronic display, try reseating the batteries or replacing them. You may also need to reset the thermostat. If you have a traditional thermostat, try setting the room temperature a few degrees higher. If heat is starting to pump out, set the temperature back to normal.

2. Clean the Electrical Contacts – The panel that your thermostat is mounted on has electrical contacts that can accumulate dirt and grime, which can affect how your thermostat “communicates” with the HVAC system. Check your maintenance manual for instructions on how to clean the contacts, as you could damage it if the wrong cleaning product or method is used. Do the same for the thermostat itself, make sure everything is dry, then test it again.

3. Check If the Heating System Is Connected to Power – Your heating system should have lights that indicate that it’s connected to a power outlet. Make sure the cable isn’t frayed or damaged – if it is, stop using it and call for repairs. Certain HVAC systems have safety features similar to breakers, which may have been tripped at some point.

4. Check If Your Heating System Has Fuel – If your heating system uses oil, wood, or petroleum gas, check and make sure it has enough fuel. Replenish if it’s running out. If it’s connected to the gas line, make sure you are not smelling gas. If you notice even the slightest hint of gas, turn off the gas mains, open all the windows, and call the gas company for assistance.
