It’s no secret that commercial HVAC systems can account for as much as half of your building’s annual energy budget, which is why figuring out ways to reduce energy loss is important. In today’s post, local AC repair and installation company Kemnitz Air Conditioning & Heating Inc. shares some tips that can help you keep HVAC energy loss to a minimum.
1. Keep up with HVAC maintenance appointments. Regular maintenance can help keep your HVAC systems running and prevent unexpected shutdowns. More importantly, it helps maintain energy efficiency. Maintenance inspections give HVAC technicians opportunities to detect signs of impending problems, like air leaks or damage to the insulation, and fix them before continued use can make them worse. Leased and purchased commercial HVAC systems typically come with a maintenance agreement with an HVAC company. If you don’t have one already, consider signing up for one. It will help prevent missed appointments and make sure your commercial HVAC systems are serviced on time.
2. Install programmable thermostats. Sometimes, tenants neglect turning down their thermostat at the end of business hours, which can result in unnecessarily high heating and air conditioning output after normal working hours. Basic programmable thermostats can make a significant difference because they eliminate the need to manually turn temperatures up or down.
3. Watch out for air leaks. Air leaks can waste energy because they facilitate thermal transfer that makes it difficult for HVAC systems to reach their target temperatures. Your building inspection checklist should include checking air ducts, weatherstripping and holes or gaps in the exterior wall. Tenants may report drafts and unidentified odors — make sure to attend to these reports as these are signs of air leaks.
4. Fix insulation issues. Poor insulation, whether due to damage or insufficient installation, can also cause thermal transfer and affect HVAC efficiency. Ideally, commercial buildings should have energy audits every four years or so. An energy auditor will help identify issues that may cause energy loss — not just the HVAC system but everything else in the building — and help you come up with a plan to help address these issues.
