As the season gives way to cooler outside temperatures, it provides the opportunity to save on your utility bills. Read on as local HVAC company Kemnitz Air Conditioning & Heating Inc. shares energy-saving tips for the fall season.
After you switch from cooling to heating, set your thermostat a few degrees lower than you usually would. Outside temperatures would still be warm enough for a few weeks that you won’t need to run your heating system at capacity. This will help you save on fuel or electricity use. If you haven’t done so already, set your programmable thermostat so it lowers bedroom temperatures at bedtime, then back up during the day.
If your home seems to lose heat quickly, or if there are drafts in several spots in your home, your home likely has air leaks that will need to be addressed. Heat loss caused by air leaks leads to an increased heating workload that can affect your utility bills. Leaks typically happen at the fenestrations (doors, windows, and skylights) as well as in poorly-insulated parts of the house. You can do the following to address air leaks in your home:
Adjust the door and window sashes to make sure they sit flush on the frame when closed.
Replace the weatherstripping to ensure a proper seal around the fenestrations.
If the rooms each have heat pumps, install brush door seals under each door.
While not a part of your home’s fenestrations, have the air ducts inspected and patched by your heating repair technician.
Fixing insulation issues and installing energy-efficient replacement windows are considerably bigger projects, but they will help address heat leaks through the attic and exterior walls.
Ceiling fans are set at the factory to turn counterclockwise to create air currents that move upward, pulling cool air from the floor. Modern ceiling fans have a switch that reverses spin direction pushing warm air from the ceiling back down. This works with your heating system in maintaining evenly warm temperatures in your home. With your ceiling fans in this setting, you can set your thermostat a few degrees lower without any noticeable difference.
