HVAC systems are designed to withstand a variety of weather conditions. However, no HVAC unit is completely impervious to storm damage, so you have to be careful and keep a close eye on your HVAC unit during and after a severe storm.
In this post, air conditioner and Carrier heater repair expert Kemnitz Air Conditioning & Heating Inc. shares tips on how to spot storm damage to your HVAC unit and what to do if you suspect that it’s been damaged by a storm.
To get an idea if your unit has been affected by a storm, below are some of the signs that you should look for:
Damaged components – High-speed winds can cause some parts of your HVAC unit to become loose or damaged, as flying debris may hit the components. This can cause your HVAC unit to produce strange odors or unusual sounds or to struggle to function.
Broken ventilation sealing – This typically occurs in offices and commercial spaces with tiled ceilings. When the wind blows through as the doors of the building are opened, this causes the ventilation sealing to become less effective. Over time, this can lead to poor ventilation, making it difficult for your HVAC system to cool and heat your interior evenly.
An increased amount of dirt and dust – When winds take off, you can expect dirt and dust to settle on your HVAC unit. This exposes your HVAC system to a number of issues, like dirty vents, unclean air, strange odors and damaged parts.
If you notice any of the issues mentioned above and you suspect that your unit has been damaged by a storm, call your trusted technician immediately. They can do a thorough inspection of the unit and carry out cooling or heating repairs if needed.
You might also want to review your homeowners insurance policy. Depending on the circumstances, it may be able to partially or fully cover the repair or replacement of HVAC parts.
