To be a smart homeowner, you need to look at the energy ratings of the systems you intend to use at home. As a good chunk of yearly expenses goes to heating and air conditioning needs, you’ll want to get the HVAC system with the best energy efficiency ratings possible. This is why the EER and the SEER labels exist.
Here’s everything you need to know about SEER and EER and why you should pay attention to them.
EER, Energy Efficiency Ratio
The energy efficiency ratio is an attempt to standardize the energy efficiency of heating and air conditioning systems. The EER of air conditioning units is calculated by dividing the electrical power input as measured in watts by the amount of cooling that’s subsequently created by the unit. The latter is measured in British Thermal Units, or BTUs. This is done under a single set of conditions.
SEER, Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
The only difference between the EER and the SEER is that the latter is seasonal. Instead of measuring the energy efficiency of a heating and air conditioning unit under one operating temperature, the SEER calculates a unit’s efficiency during an entire cooling season. This means there are varying temperatures to take into account.
SEER or EER: Which to Pay Attention To
Federal rules mandate manufacturers to display only the SEER. However, many air conditioning units have the EER displayed as well, as both ratings can be helpful given different situations. As a rule of thumb, the EER is a more accurate efficiency figure for areas prone to temperatures of 95 degrees or higher while the SEER can be more helpful for those in moderate climates.
