Rain & Its Effect on Your HVAC System

If you have a heat pump or air conditioning system, you know that half of it is installed outside. With that in mind, you may be concerned about whether or not it will perform as intended when it rains. Local HVAC contractor Kemnitz Air Conditioning & Heating discusses this matter further below.

The Answer: Rain Isn’t Harmful to Your HVAC System

The outdoor unit of a heat pump or AC system is built to withstand all types of weather, including rain. From small showers to heavy downpours, the equipment’s normal operation won’t be harmed. In fact, rain can even aid in its performance by cooling down the internal coils and dislodging debris, dirt and any organic matter that might have accumulated over time.

Also, there’s no need to worry about a possible electric shock when it rains outside and your HVAC equipment is still in operation. Its inner workings, particularly the electrical wiring that connects all the components, have the appropriate insulation to protect against moisture.

Conditions That Can Affect the Outdoor Unit

Rain alone won’t affect the outdoor unit, but severe weather might. Strong winds, for example, can carry debris like tree branches and loose concrete, which could damage the condenser and even enter the equipment. Damage to the interior and electrical components is possible in the event of a flood. Once the storm clears, get in touch with your AC and heating repair contractor as soon as possible before starting up the unit again.

Some homeowners cover the exterior of their outdoor AC unit to protect it against strong winds. If you choose to do so, make sure the plastic or tarp that you use allows for proper ventilation. This way, condensation won’t build up inside the unit and cause wiring and other components to corrode.
