SOS: My Heat Pump Won’t Switch to Heating Mode

During the colder months, heat pumps are integral to ensure your family’s comfort. It could be quite challenging if your heat pump doesn’t switch to heating mode. Before calling a professional to check your system, here are the common causes of this issue and find the appropriate heating repair.

Low Refrigerant Charge

The most common cause of a heat pump not switching to heating mode is a low refrigerant charge. When there isn’t enough refrigerant, it can prevent the heat pump from operating correctly. To fix this problem, you’ll need to call in an HVAC technician to check and recharge your system with the right amount of refrigerant.

Faulty Reversing Valve

Another possible cause of your heat pump not switching to heating mode is a deficient reversing valve. The reversing valve controls the direction of the refrigerant flow in the system, which can prevent it from switching to heating mode if it’s not working correctly.

To fix this problem, you’ll also have to call an HVAC technician who can check and replace your reversing valve if needed.

Dirty/Blocked Air Filters

If your air filters are dirty or blocked, it can prevent the heat pump from switching to heating mode. To address this issue, you’ll need to replace the air filter and check that it’s not blocked.

Faulty Thermostat

Another possible cause of your heat pump not switching to heating mode is a defective thermostat. If the thermostat isn’t working correctly, it can prevent the heat pump from switching to heating mode. Fixing this would also require professional assistance.
