Will UV Lamps Really Improve Your Indoor Air Quality?

It isn’t pleasant to think about, but under certain circumstances your home can become an oasis of sorts for bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus. Any or all of these biological invaders could be lurking in your ductwork, inside your air conditioner, in your basement, inside your walls or in your attic, contaminating your living space and fouling the very air you breathe.

If your home does become infested it could cause sickness and allergies to run rampant, and you might have no idea why your family was suddenly experiencing so many health difficulties. The problem can become especially acute if your HVAC system is contaminated, since your HVAC equipment and ductwork are designed to distribute air to every corner of your home.

But you shouldn’t panic over the scary possibilities. Instead, you should investigate a technological cure for organic indoor pollution known as UV lamps, which can stave off microscopic interlopers before they gain a permanent foothold in your humble abode.

UV Lamps for Heating and Cooling Systems

Lamps that emit ultraviolet radiation are big trouble for bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus. UV light is an invisible killer of these invisible particles, zapping them into non-existence with electromagnetic radiation of extremely short and extremely destructive wavelengths.

UV lamps sold for use in conjunction with HVAC systems are manufactured for one specific purpose: to smite the nasties that settle in your ductwork and/or take root on your air conditioner’s coil and drain pan. If you purchase UV lights your HVAC contractor will install them where they can do the most good, where they can shine their killing rays directly on the tiny plants or critters that have put down stakes in the heart of your HVAC system.

Generally you’re vulnerable to invasion in areas where moisture accumulates, and when you summon an HVAC technician to inspect your system he or she will know exactly where to look for signs of trouble.

UV Lamps and Indoor Air Contamination Don’t Mix

If you or your family are experiencing constant head colds or the symptoms of allergy—sinus congestion, runny nose, rashes and itchiness, swollen throat, headaches, constant fatigue, lack of energy and so on—bacteria, mold and their fellow travelers may be responsible. They may be contaminating your indoor air, forcing you to breathe organic pollution that can and will make you sick.

A high-quality HVAC air filter works well for non-organic indoor air pollutants, but the chances are it won’t capture more than a tiny fraction of the micro-organisms that are contaminating your air space, if indeed they are present. One or two well-placed UV lights can make a decisive difference, however, and if you have the slightest doubt about that your HVAC contractor should be able to provide you with multiple references from past clients singing the praises of these ingenious devices (at Kemnitz we’ve collected scores of positive reports on the efficacy of UV lighting).
